Balder and Hoder

Viking Myths

BALDER

The god Balder is kind, sweet-natured and handsome.

In the Viking myths, Loki tricks Balder’s brother Hoder into killing him, which was the worst deed ever done among gods or men.

The gods try to free Balder from Hel, queen of the dead, but he must stay with her until the Doom of the Powers.

The story of how Balder dies is told in ‘Balder’s Death’, Chapter 16 of Viking Myths: Stories of the Norse Gods and Goddesses.
