The dwarf Brokk

Viking Myths

DWARFS

When the gods created the world out of the flesh of the etin Ymir, they found there were maggots living in the flesh. They turned these maggots into the dwarfs, who live below the earth or inside large boulders.

The dwarfs are skilled craftsmen, and they make many things for the gods in the myths. Freya’s necklace is made by four dwarfs, who she sees through the door of their stone. Thor’s hammer is made by the dwarf Brokk along with other treasures in a competition with dwarfs known as the Sons of Ivaldi.

The story of the making of Thor’s hammer is told in ‘Loki’s Wager’, Chapter 8 of Viking Myths: Stories of the Norse Gods and Goddesses.
