Viking Myths

WHAT IS A MYTH?

Even if you know one when you see one, it’s often hard to say exactly what makes a myth.

One way to sort out myths from other stories is that myths are mainly about the gods and goddesses. They take place in a timeless setting which is outside history.

Sometimes gods and goddesses appear in stories about people. But if the people are at the centre of the story, and if it takes place in the historical or imaginary past, then it’s a legend not a myth.

That’s the definition used in this book of Viking myths, which retells all the important myths from the creation of the Nine Worlds up to the Doom of the Powers.

There’s more about Viking myths, beliefs and religion in the Introduction to Viking Myths: Stories of the Norse Gods and Goddesses.
