Viking Myths RAGNAROK, OR THE DOOM OF THE POWERS The Vikings believed the world would be destroyed in a great battle between gods and etins, called Ragnarok which means ‘the Doom of the Powers’. At this battle the dead warriors from Odin’s hall will fight against the forces of chaos, and everything will be destroyed. Gods and etins will kill one another. The earth will sink under the sea and the sky will be filled with fire. Only two people will shelter in the boughs of Mimir’s Wood. They will return when the earth rises again from the water, and new gods will come to Asgarth. The story of Ragnarok is told in ‘The Doom of the Powers’, Chapter 21 of Viking Myths: Stories of the Norse Gods and Goddesses. ![]() Buy the book on Amazon:
