VALKYRIES, OR KILL CHOOSERS

Odin’s handmaidens are called valkyrjar, which means ‘Kill Choosers’. They decide who is to be killed in battle. According to one poem, they take half of the dead to Freya’s hall of Seat Roomy, and the rest to Odin where they join the Lone Warriors in Kill Hall.

Kill Choosers are sometimes described as beautiful maidens that brave warriors might fall in love with, but at other times they appear as hideous troll women.

You can read about Kill Choosers and the other inhabitants of Odin's hall in ‘The Aesir’, Chapter 3 of
Viking Myths: Stories of the Norse Gods and Goddesses.
